You're attending the Oscars, which designer do you want to wear walking down the red carpet?

Emilio Pucci

Favorite shopping spot in your city: Well, I live in the sticks, so Vons? Thank goodness for online shopping. I live on Gilt and Rue La La

When did you first realize you wanted to become a hair stylist?
High school. I loved doing the hair and makeup for cheerleading

Where do you get your inspiration for when you do a cut/color/style on a client?

Current trends, their interests, what I feel like doing that day.

Who is your dream client to do hair for?
Kate Middleton, Id love to get my hands on those lovely locks.

What look would you do on them?

Platinum blonde (just kidding), but maybe something more edgy.

Which school did you attend to become a hair stylist?
Golden West College in Huntington Beach, CA

What are three key products every woman/man should have for their hair?
Other than obvious shower products I would say, 1. Hair Spray 2. Blow-dry or styling aid 3. Leave in conditioner

What is a bazaar hair trick every guy/girl can master to achieve amazing hair on a daily basis? My favorite is adding a little shampoo to your roots before rinsing your conditioner out. You get the benefit of conditioning your scalp (which people skip for fear of oily hair) but makes sure it come out perfectly clean.

What is the biggest compliment you have ever received regarding your work?

That having their hair done makes their day, week, or even month. The confidence it gives people is absolutely amazing.

If you could have a life time supply from any hair product company which would it be and why? Enjoy. It’s the one line I always go back to. I know it better than any other, and trust it completely.

How do you feel hair and fashion are connected to each other?
They are an integral part of each other. They are both constantly changing with trends. You can’t have one without the other. A great outfit is a waste without good hair. And a good hair day is a waste without the right outfit.

If you had one piece of advice you would like to pass along to other inspiring stylists, what would it be? Never ever stop learning. Continuing your education is the single most important thing in the business. No one wants to go to someone who does the same things over and over. You also don’t want to be unprepared when new trends arise.

5 fun facts about you:

-I've dyed my hair possibly 10 different colors [poor thing]
-My collection of perfumes is bigger than any department store
-Never been in the snow
-When I was a kid I used to fall down the stairs a lot, so now I have this odd fear of falling down the stairs
-I'm a concert junkie! Every artist I can go see live I will!

You're attending the Oscars, which designer do you want to wear walking down the red carpet?
Alexander McQueen!

Favorite shopping spot in your city:
Harwin! Stock up in lashes, contact lenses and more!

When did you first realize you wanted to become a make up artist?
When I was a kid I used my mothers makeup to paint myself as a cat or sneak a red lipstick in school and got in trouble for it, I mean, I was only in elementary school lol
I've tried other careers but this is where my heart belongs.

What is your biggest inspiration when you do make up on a client?
Their reaction after I'm done. It's like all the confidence in the world just hit her and she is just fascinated with her own beauty. It's remarkable to feel that you accomplished such courage with just some lipstick and eyeshadow.

Who is your dream client to do makeup on?

Backstage at a Dior fashion show! or a John Galliano show!

What look would you do on them?
Go Picasso and Andy Warhol on them! Get crazy!

Who is your favorite local photographer to work with?

I love the Houston photography scene. Every single photographer I have worked with has such amazing vision and talent, it's so hard to even pick a couple!

What are three key products every woman should have in her make up bag?

-Powder compact for touch ups
-The lip color you have that day
-Mascara

What is a bazaar beauty trick every woman can master?
Hate those lipstick marks on your teeth? Put your index finger in your mouth, wrap those red lips around it and POP it right back out! You will never have to worry about an embarrassing red mark on your teeth again!

What is a current make up trend you love?
I'm loving the bold lip and very nude eyes!

If you could have a life time supply from any cosmetic company, which company would it be?
That is so hard, I would go with Illamasqua or Makeup Forever.

What is the biggest complement you have ever received regarding your work?
Well the biggest complement I have ever got when I was working at a huge cosmetic retail store. A beautiful client sat down my chair wanting some false lashes. She told me how she is fighting breast cancer and lost all her hair. I did a full face makeover, first time anyone put makeup on her. When she saw herself in the mirror she was in such awe, almost started crying telling me that she hasn't felt so beautiful in so long. Embraced me with the biggest hug ever and just said "Thank you". I will never forget her or that small "thank you". That will be the biggest compliment I will ever have in my career.

How do you feel fashion and makeup go hand in hand?

Makeup is an accessory, along with nails, shoes, jewelry and I believe that a perfect red lip with that little black dress is the perfect combo for a fashionista.

What is a photograph that leaves you in awe and why?
This beautiful work by Kevyn Aucoin! Believe it or not this is NOT Marilyn Monroe! This is Lisa Marie Presley, that's right. The daughter of the King of Rock himself. This truly inspires me so much, the fact that makeup can do so much!

If you had one piece of advice you would like to pass along to other inspiring MUAs, what would it be?
Never give up. Seriously, I know it's cliche but it's true! Keep pushing, put your whole heart into it and you WILL succeed as an amazing artist!

5 Feel-Good Nutrition Tips to Start 2013 Off Right

Well, it’s that time of year again. If you made the New Years Resolution to eat healthy or exercise more, hopefully you’ve stuck to it and if not…well, we’ve all been there. Every January, about 1 in 3 Americans resolve to better themselves in some way in the new year. 75% of those people stick to their goals for at least the first week…but then it’s downhill from there.

Most resolutions that do not succeed past the first week of the new year tend to be habits and behaviors that are difficult to change. It’s not enough to simply say that you want to eat healthy and exercise more. You need a realistic plan!

A resolution to exercise more doesn’t mean you have to run 10 miles a day in the first week, nor does it mean going vegan or buying into whatever costly juice cleanse Gwyneth Paltrow is trying now. It’s about moving at a pace that is realistic, with goals that support your success, not challenge it. You can do this by starting a routine that helps you feel great from the inside out. These five feel-good nutrition tips are incredibly simple and easy to incorporate into your every day lifestyle and the best part is that they are super affordable! Start with these and I promise you will start to feel like you can accomplish any goal you set before yourself in no time!

Nutrition Tip #1
Eat only real, whole foods.

No more of that refined crap in a can, no more processed meats, no more Lean Cuisine frozen dinners. Whole foods are foods that are unprocessed, unrefined and do not contain added ingredients that just increase the amount of salt, carbohydrates and fat.

When you eat whole foods, you get all of the vitamins, minerals and other good nutrients that are in its natural state. Don’t confuse the term with organic food, as whole foods are not necessarily organic, nor are organic foods necessarily whole.

And no fear ladies and gents…because eating real, unprocessed food does not mean you need to break the bank at Whole Foods every time you want to make a smoothie. I’m always amazed at how much real food I can get at Trader Joe’s (or any regular grocery store) for $30. Go to your grocery store with your normal budget and focus on making smarter choices. You’ll be amazed at how much you save when you start stocking a well-rounded supply of natural ingredients, free from the associated costs of R&D, marketing and packaging

A good rule of thumb is to avoid anything that has more than a handful of ingredients and if you can’t pronounce an ingredient…it’s probably not a real, whole food.

Examples of whole foods: Fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, oats.

Nutrition Tip #2
Monitor your salt intake.

Throw out your saltshakers, and avoid processed foods that contain it. Your every day table salt is de-natured sodium chloride salt that is dead, kiln-dried and highly processed. Table salt creates a “false fat” look that makes you feel bloated and can leave you several pounds heavier than you truly weigh. Yikes!

Instead, grab a high quality sea salt at the store and use in moderation. Celtic sea salt is my favorite and while it’s a bit pricier than your average table salt, a tiny amount of this stuff really goes a long way. You can also swap salt out for other seasonings & herbs such as rosemary, dill, turmeric, cayenne and black pepper. I add cayenne to my salads, meats and vegetables for a spicy kick that also boosts metabolism!

P.S. If you’re feeling really bloated after eating a meal that has a lot of table salt in it, cranberry is a natural diuretic that flushes excessive fluids out of your body. However, drinking a sugar-filled cranberry cocktail is the opposite of helpful. Instead pour some concentrated cranberry into a glass of fresh water with some stevia to drink in the evenings! The natural version of cranberry juice takes some getting used to, but I drink it all the time now and it’s actually the sugary stuff that tastes nasty to me now!

Nutrition Tip #3
Lemons, lemons, lemons!

The liver is our body’s main detoxifying organ, so we want to treat it right! Lemons are a powerful fruit that are filled with flavor, while also boosting liver function and delivering good enzymes and vitamin C to your diet.

Maximize your detox and your health by getting into the habit of drinking a mug of hot water with the juice of half a lemon squeezed in first thing in the morning. It jumpstarts the detox process and really starts to become addicting, I promise!

An extra tip, instead of oily vinaigrettes and other processed salad dressings, spritz a little lemon juice on your salad for a yummy and fresh tasting meal!

Nutrition Tip #4
Get your greens!

There are very few foods that are as rich in essential vitamins and minerals as green vegetables. High in calcium, vitamins A, C, & E, fiber, beta-carotene, good enzymes and more, they really are some of the best foods you can eat every day!

My absolute favorite smoothie in the world is Kimberly Snyder’s Glowing Green Smoothie (recipe below). If you aren’t familiar with Kimberly’s Beauty Detox program, it’s a must!

The Glowing Green Smoothie (GGS) is the core of her program because it’s one of the best ways ever to start your day off right. It is packed with delicious greens and juicy fruit to make it taste sweet while also leaving you with more energy than you could ever hope for from a regular cup of coffee. Even my boyfriend loves it, sometimes I come home and he’s having one as a snack after already having had one for breakfast!

Kimberly Snyder’s Glowing Green Smoothie Recipe
Ingredients
-1 1/2 cups water

-1 head organic romaine lettuce, chopped

-3-4 stalks organic celery

-1/2 head of a large bunch, or 3/4 of a small bunch of spinach

-1 organic apple, cored and chopped

-1 organic pear, cored and chopped

-1 organic banana

-Juice of 1/2 fresh organic lemon

Optional

-1/3 bunch organic cilantro (stems okay)

-1/3 bunch organic parsley (stems okay)

Directions

Add the water and chopped head of romaine to the blender. Starting the blender at low speed, mix until smooth. Gradually moving to higher speeds, add the celery, apple and pear. Add the cilantro and parsley, if you are choosing to add them. Add the banana and lemon juice last.
The fruit and lemon cut right though the grass taste. Feel free to mix and match different seasonal greens and fruits, as these two specific food groups combine well.

Nutrition Tip #5
Ditch the Dairy!

This is probably one of the most difficult changes that most American’s face when choosing a healthier lifestyle. We grew up with dairy in our morning bowl of Lucky Charms, in our yogurt, grilled cheese, pizza and our heaping bowls of ice cream. So naturally, when someone tells us that dairy isn't actually healthy for us…we have a hard time accepting it.

Making steps to eliminate dairy from your diet is SO important to your overall health because DAIRY IS NOT DESIGNED TO BE CONSUMED BY HUMANS, regardless of what big corporations will have you believe.

Most people believe that because dairy contains calcium, it’s necessary to our daily diet. Not true!! You can get your calcium for eating whole foods like green vegetables, nuts, seeds, sardines & salmon! Drink a Glowing Green Smoothie and you will get plenty of calcium!

Stock your fridge with nut milks like unsweetened almond milk and coconut milk instead, you’ll never need to go back to dairy, they’re delicious!

P.S. Avoid soy as a dairy replacement… 91% of soybeans grown in the U.S. are genetically modified! Yuck!

I hope these tips have been helpful for you and that you can start eating your way to better health!!!

x Amanda

'Girls' like to party

This Sunday 'Girls' on HBO returns at 9 pm and we are literally counting down the hours and minutes.

Inspired by a friend who is having a party for the occasion we decided to do a post on how you can have your own budget friendly lil get together and tips on how to be the best host/hostess and guest.

If you're hosting:

1. Make 2-3 snacks
These can be as easy as basic cheese, meat and crackers with some fresh fruit. If you have 2 different kinds of crackers, 2 different kinds of cheeses and some roasted turkey and berries you're good to go. Trader Joes is our pick for this. They have great food at great prices.

2. Do a pot luck
Make some homemade chili during the day in your slow cooker or bake some pink Funfetti cupcakes then ask guests to bring an item to share. This makes your get together less stressful. You can also make it fun by asking each guest to make their "famous this" or "5th generation that" and then ask them to write their recipe down on a flash card then after the party do an email to those whom attended and share the recipes. It allows others to learn new cooking tips and styles.

2. If you drink or have guests attending that do make sure to have at least two bottles of wine
This shows you're prepared but keep you in budget. Wine also is a drink you sip and will last longer than vodka sodas. BevMo is the place to hit up for this. They have their great 5 cent wine deal where you buy a selected wine at normal price and get the second bottle for 5 cents. You can walk out with two bottles for around $10. See the 5 cent wine deals here.

3. Keep it fun with games
Before or after the show you can keep the party going with some fun games. You can stick to your basic Cranium and Apples to Apples or come up with some great games revolved around the show. We do suggest avoiding drinking games since most of your pals will have work the next morning and Monday's are hard enough already without the hangover. If you want to try a themed game have everyone one of your friends write a short funny story before they come over about their teenage years or early 20's years. Seal each story in an envelope and put it in a basket. Read the stories out loud and have the guests try to guess who's story it is. There's also this Quiz you can print off and have each guest fill out to figure out which character they are most like form the show.

4. Suggest a "no phone" rule
In this day and age our attention spans are short and we basically have our phones glued to our hands. Suggest a "no phone" rule to keep the party more interactive. Have a bowl all your friends can put their phones in and ask them to turn them onto silent. This way you get quality time with your friends and not your smart phone.

5. Apply a dress code
Having friends over is always a fun way to dress up or down. You can either make it fancy by having it "cocktail attire" or make it a pajama party where you request guests wear their favorite and most comfy PJ's.

If you're a guest:

1. Bring easy to transport foods and shareable items
Think pasta salad, brownies or chips with some fabulous guacamole. Make sure to bring it in a plastic tubberware you may not care about letting go of. This way if you leave it at the hostesses house you won't need to track it down later. Most grocery stores carry plastic tubberware for $2-$4.

2. Bring that extra wine/vodka/gin you have left over from the holidays
It's more than likely you received a bottle of booze from a co-worker, friend or relative for the holidays because they did not know what else to give you. Sorry to those who got an ugly sweater or Old Navy gift card. You probably should also get that stuff out of the house since most people tend to make New Years resolutions like "be healthier" and "drink less".

3. Bring a gift
Even if you are not asked to bring a food item or alcohol it's always nice to bring a special something for the host/hostess. This could be as simple as a 'thank you' card or a scarf to beat the cold. Target, H&M and Forever 21 have TONS of cute lil accessories on sale. Most grocery stores and drugstores also carry $10 gift cards for stores like Forever 21 and Amazon. It's a small gesture but it shows you care.

4. See if anyone wants to carpool
If you live in a city where driving a car is how you travel rather than public transportation offer to give a friend who lives on the way or close to you a ride or see if anyone can give you a lift. This will save gas for you or a friend and if anyone normally walks or bikes places this will help keep you or your friend warm from the winter cold.

5. Be on time

When you're a guest and the party revolves around a time sensitive matter it's always best to try and be 10 minutes early rather than 10 minutes late. If you arrive early and the host/hostess is still putting out food or tidying up offer to help and take some stress off their back.

Delicious recipes for your party:

1. Guacamole

2 avocados
1 small onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 ripe tomato, chopped
1 lime, juice
salt and pepper to taste

Peel and mash avocados in a medium serving bowl. Stir in onion, garlic, tomato, lime juice, salt and pepper. Season with remaining lime juice and salt and pepper to taste. Chill for half an hour to blend flavors.

Tip: leave the pit from one avocado in the guacamole to keep it from browning

2. Pasta Salad

1 (16 ounce) package uncooked rotini pasta
1 (16 ounce) bottle Italian salad dressing
2 cucumbers, chopped
6 tomatoes, chopped
1 bunch green onions, chopped
4 ounces grated Parmesan cheese
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Place pasta in the pot, cook for 8 to 12 minutes, until al dente, and drain.
In a large bowl, toss the cooked pasta with the Italian dressing, cucumbers, tomatoes, and green onions. In a small bowl, mix the Parmesan cheese and Italian seasoning, and gently mix into the salad. Cover, and refrigerate until serving.

3. Meat Free Chili

1 can black or pinto beans, drained
1 can kidney beans, drained
1 can diced tomatoes
1/2 onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 bell pepper, diced (any color)
2 tbsp olive oil
1/4 cup vegetable broth
2 tbsp chili powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
dash cayenne pepper (optional)
dash red pepper flakes (optional)
1/2 cup TVP + 1/2 cup water (optional)

In a medium to large soup pot, sautee the onion, bell pepper and garlic in the olive oil. Add tomatoes, vegetable broth and chili powder and stir.
Reduce heat to medium low and add beans. Stir occasionally and cook for at least 20 minutes. Add TVP and water 10 minutes before done cooking. Of course, the longer you cook chili the better, but if you're pressed for time, 20 minutes is fine.
For a spicier chili, add extra cayenne and red pepper flakes.

Tip: have shredded cheese in a bowl on the side for guests to add on top of the chili to their liking

4. Balsamic Bruschetta

8 roma (plum) tomatoes, diced
1/3 cup chopped fresh basil
1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
1 teaspoon olive oil
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 loaf French bread, toasted and sliced

In a bowl, toss together the tomatoes, basil, Parmesan cheese, and garlic. Mix in the balsamic vinegar, olive oil, kosher salt, and pepper. Serve on toasted bread slices.
